Devin’s Report, Walterboro, Spartanburg, and Gaffney Crits, S. Carolina, 4/30/14

DC

Walterboro, Spartanburg and Gaffney Coming into Walterboro, we were rested but unsure of how the week was going to play out since all the other teams were similarly rested.  The real question was whether or not we would be able to keep Dan on his roll of winning races since he had won the first two Speed Week races.  Three in a row was a tough goal to set, but after the first two, it was beginning to be easier and easier to imagine. Walterboro has 6 corners and is pitch black in some spots.  There are times when you … Continue reading

Devin’s Report, Athens and Roswell Crits, Georgia, 4/25/14

DC

Athens Twilight is probably the best attended criterium in the country.  The town of Athens gets behind the race in a big way.  The 1k course is lined all the way around 6 deep.  I know because when it was time to stage, I could barely get through to the course.  A spectator helped me to push through the crowd to the fence where I could get onto the course.  Crazy. The big story of this race is a wreck that involved a moto and an unconscious rider and then a pile-up as a result of the moto.  Chad explained … Continue reading

Devin’s Report, Winston Salem G.P., North Carolina, 4/17/14

DC

Winston Salem was a brutal race.  it was one I had marked on the calendar hoping to do well.  Coming off a rough start to the season, I had modified my goal to just do the races and see how I felt. The weekend has two races, the Winston Salem North Carolina UCI road race and the NCC crit. They are relatively new to the calendar.  At 120 miles, the 7 mile circuit road race is one of the longest and highest ranked one day races in the country.  It has a good payout and the course is not only … Continue reading

Devin’s Report, Novant Health Crit and Belmont G.P., North Carolina, 4/12/14

DC

The Charlotte Novant Health Criterium is the bike racing equivalent of the game shows where people go into a plastic box and grab as much money as they can while it blows around.  They put $40,000 out with half in mid-race prime sprints.  That means that basically every other lap is a sprint.  Add to that 8 narrow corners with 2 wide open straights and you have a course that is throttle on the whole time.  I was sick, so it was tough for me to do much.  The interesting part of the race was that Holloway made a small … Continue reading

Devin’s Report, Redlands Classic Stage Race, Redlands, CA, 4/2/14

DC

Three currents ran through the Redlands 5 day stage race for me, the progression towards sickness, the battle for high scores in the Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man arcade at the host house, and just being able to finish each stage within the time cut. Stage 1 was the one that made me most nervous.  It was a 58-mile circuit race with a false flat leading into a short and very steep climb each 2.8 mile lap.  Highland circuit was last raced in Redlands when Chris Horner won in 2003.   Intimidating.  I knew I had to make it a third of … Continue reading

Devin’s Report, San Dimas Stage Race, San Dimas, CA, 3/27/14

DC 3-8-14

The San Dimas Stage Race was an eye-opener.  It consisted of 3 events: a 4 mile uphill TT, a shortened 84 mile circuit race which ended up being 70 miles since they had to check the dam for earthquake damage, and a pretty straight forward 6 corner criterium. The four mile TT was rough, as I would say that my personal strength and body type are not suited to uphills or time trials.  My teammate Chad Hartley beat me by one tenth of a second which he was sure to tell me.  Based on his power data, and using my … Continue reading

Road Disc Wheelset, Industry Nine with HED Belgium Plus

Indusrty Nine & Belgium Plus 1

Building custom wheels is a great way to get a durable set that perfectly fits your checklist of needs. All the component of the wheels are chosen individually, so you can vary things like the number of spokes, style of hub, and strength of rim to make it suit your riding style. This set of wheels was particularly cool, so we thought we’d feature it today. The rims are HED Belgium Plus, which are the coolest looking rims available, as well as being able to be used tubeless. They are also built in the new 25mm width that hold your … Continue reading

Cannonball/Hub Tour of St. Louis

HubRacingLogo

Congratulations to Kate Hrubes, Steph Nadeau, Jen Schook, Jay Cogan, Phil Nadeau, Molly Brady, Alice Butler, Dave Smith, Tom Petty, Andrew Petty, Leo Smith, Phil Wehrman, Marty Levine, Rock Wamsley, Chris Miller, and Bill Howells for making it out last weekend for the Tour of St. Louis. It was a cold start to our season and the wind certainly didn’t help the plans for soloing to victory. Though, despite the conditions Kate did just this and who won her TT. Nicely done. And, for those of you who missed the weekend action, here’s our top 10 finishers, Jen Schook, Molly … Continue reading

Devin’s Report, Tucson Bicycle Classic Stage Race, Tucson AZ, 3/14/14

DC 3-8-14

Training Camp was a long week where we got our bikes, had them fitted to us, did some long training rides and then capped it off with the Tucson Bicycle Classic Stage Race.  It also happened to cap off with notoriously poor Tucson pavement cheese gratering half my body. The Monday after Old Pueblo, we drove up to Phoenix to get fits from fit guru Chris Pulleyn.  He has fitted riders like Ekimov, Hincapie, Busche and some jerk named Hartley. To say that he was thoroughly experienced was an understatement.  He immediately saw issues I had dealt with for years … Continue reading

Devin’s Report: Old Pueblo Grand Prix, Tucson AZ, 3/8/14

DC 3-8-14

This week is the beginning of team camp, so to kick it off, we raced the Old Pueblo Classic in Tucson Arizona on March 9th. Old Pueblo is a standard of the early season where the fit west coasters beat up on everyone from cold climates. For the first ride of a team, it was a good test. The race was about a mile loop with 6 corners and 2 long straights. The three corners coming into the finish were narrow and bumpy. The wind was crossing headwind for both straights. I rolled up to the start towards the back … Continue reading
