Co-Motion is a leader in top quality tandems, and this is a new model for them: The Java. It’s parts package is similar to Co-Motion’s classic Speedster model, but the Java has a new oversized and butted cromoly steel tubeset used in the frame .
The most exciting feature of the java is the wider tire clearance built into the frame! The frame and fork can fit up to a 2.0″ width tire. We built this particular one using Velocity Dyad rims that can accept anywhere from a 28mm width tire (standard for road tandems) up to a 2″ width mountain bike style tire. The green bike shown has a middle sized 40mm width tire, which is about 1.6″ width, making it a perfect gravel-path machine. This configuration would be great for a 200 mile ride on the KATY trail!
The mountain bike rear derailler allows the wide range gearing that tandems need, the low cog on this one is a 34 tooth. Disc brakes like these, made specifically to work with a road brake lever, have become almost universal on current tandems.
